Piano Maintenance

The sound of the 88 piano notes is produced by over 220 strings and the average tension per string is approximately 75-90kg. The combined tension of the strings is approximately 20 tons. Pianos use living breathing materials, that includes pieces of cloth, felt, and buckskin, as well as wool, wood, and metal. Temperature and humidity throughout the seasons change, resulting in changes in the tension and thus changes to the pitch.

*The weather in Hong Kong is a subtropical climate.
Typically a piano in Hong Kong should be tuned three times a year.

The inner playing mechanism of a piano is called the action and is also very sensitive. All 88 keys should work together in the right way to make a sound when you press a key, and should be regulated periodically for evenness, speed, power and control. One should understand that all of the regulation procedures are interrelated.

This is the adjustment of the hammers of the piano to balance the tone. This is done mainly by changing the density or hardness of the hammer felt. Voicing techniques include proper alignment of the hammers with the strings, filing or sanding a layer of felt off to reshape the hammer.

Basic Maintenance and Room Environment

It is very important that the inside of the piano is checked. Pins used under the keys are called the balance & front pins, very often they are rusted due to lack of climate- control. Removing rust and appropriate cleaning, reduces friction so that the touch will be smoother. Piano manufacturers suggest that the ideal humidity level for pianos is about 40-60%.

*Please try to keep the piano with humidity level at least less than 68% in your room.

These are main elements of piano maintenance and are very important to keep your piano in good condition with brightness of sound.

The changes in the sound can also be caused by so-called ‘wear effects’ which means that the cloth and felt layers and also the wooden parts get worn after some time of use. The age, amount of usage and environment all affect the piano. Thus, the sound might become dull and the touch might feel a bit heavy.

Rusted Tuning Pins

Worn parts should be replaced or repaired and the action and keys regulated, so that the sound and touch will be back to normal.

Here in Hong Kong, due to high humidity levels, metal parts such as center pins, key balance pins etc are often found to be rusted and need to be replaced. Components from your piano may be temporarily removed and taken to my workshop. Parts will be repaired whenever possible, or replaced.

Key Bushing Cloth

Occasionally it will be necessary to have the piano fully repaired. Restoration and repair can range from work on the piano action to full piano rebuilding to balance all the components of the piano.

The Piano may need to stay at the workshop for approximately 2-3 months during the repair works, such as replacement of the hammer and restoring or rebuilding the action or complete replacement, restringing all music wires, check down-bearing and crown, repair soundboard and bridges etc.

The need for an overhaul, depends on the usage and age of the piano. It is often needed for pianos more than 25-30 years old.

It is possible to give a second life to
your favorite piano by repairing and overhauling it.
